Mail-in lab fees

If you send a sample to a lab yourself, the lab charges per sample (prices from each lab, October 29, 2026):

Lab Fee per sample
Western Analytical $40 for one, $30 each for two or more
Pro-Lab $40 standard, $60 express
EMSL $95

EPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission don't recommend taking samples yourself, because sampling can release fibers. See how asbestos testing works.

What makes it cost more

  • How much there is, and whether it's crumbly ("friable") or solid.
  • Where it is. Attics, crawlspaces and exterior work cost more than an open room.
  • Containment. Sealing the work area, negative air and cleanup are part of the job.
  • Disposal. Asbestos waste has to go to a landfill that accepts it.
  • Putting things back: new ceiling texture, flooring or insulation is usually extra.

Saving money safely

  • Don't remove what you don't need to. EPA says undamaged asbestos that won't be disturbed is usually best left alone. Covering floor tiles with new flooring is often an option (EPA).
  • Get at least three written quotes, and check each contractor's state license.
  • Hire the inspector separately. EPA advises that the professional who assesses the asbestos shouldn't be connected with the firm that removes it.
