The best asbestos test kits

The kit price isn't the real price: most kits charge a separate lab fee per sample, from about $30 to $95. Choose a lab listed in NIST's NVLAP directory. And know that EPA and CPSC don't recommend taking samples yourself: a professional inspection is the safer route.

Based on each lab's published prices and NIST's NVLAP directory, checked October 29, 2026. Not yet tested hands-on. How we compare

First: should you test it yourself?

EPA says, "Taking samples yourself is not recommended," because sampling done wrong "can be more hazardous than leaving the material alone." If you go ahead, follow CPSC's precautions (see how testing works), and don't sample anything badly damaged or crumbly. Never sample vermiculite: EPA says to assume it contains asbestos.

NVLAP listings were confirmed by lab name and code in NIST's directory on October 29, 2026. We couldn't view each lab's accreditation scope, so ask the lab to confirm it's accredited for bulk asbestos analysis (PLM).

Our take

  • Cheapest per sample for several samples: Western Analytical, if you're comfortable packaging your own sample.
  • Easiest to find: Pro-Lab, sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, Walmart and Ace. Budget about $50 per sample including the kit.
  • Avoid kits whose lab you can't find in the NVLAP directory.

Protect yourself while sampling

CPSC says to wear disposable gloves when sampling, and Illinois EPA advises homeowners doing their own asbestos work to wear a respirator with asbestos-rated cartridges. NIOSH has removed over a thousand fraudulent P100 filter listings from online marketplaces, so buy respirators from the manufacturer's own store or a listing you've checked against NIOSH's approved list.

Recalls

We found no CPSC recalls for asbestos test kits or respirators from 2024 to October 2026.
